Theater of the Oppressed

Students frozen in the following scenes:

Scene 1: Woman pulling a blanket up to her face, she's smiling while man is standing trying to pull it down.

Scene 2: Boy crouched with face buried under his arm, near Scene 1.

Scene 3: Boy reading Shakespeare with the following text on the page: "...smile and smile and be a villain...Remorseless, treacherous, lecherous, kindless villain...when he is drunk asleep, or in his rage/Or in the incestuous pleasure of his bed..."

Scene 4: Girl laying flat, eyes closed, sleeping in peace with empty bottle of pills next to her. Boy above her almost grabbing her zipper on her jacket, while covering his eyes in shame.

Figure out what THEME connects all these scenes together. Follow our discussions as Mrs. Davis acts as our scribe for our comments.

* they all deal with John
* 3 people are covering up their faces
* are they ashamed?
* the woman seems giddy...she's Linda
* naked? what theme goes with nakedness?
* all represents one type of relationship
* they're being taken advantage of
* shows the chaos that drugs have on people
* we're back to ashamed
* 2 of the scenes have to do with sex...the only one that doesn't show shame is the one where he is reading
* Why is the man pulling the zipper covering his face?
==>Man will do what he wants regardless of what it takes for him to get it: reading, aggression, temptation, etc.

* it's all about promiscuity
* why is she smiling and why is he serious?
* what does it relate to the book?
* individuality...how so? is there a lack of individuality?
* temptation...the theme...overall message though?
* depression...John is depressed
* do they all have to deal with Shakespeare?
* No!
* temptation...John doesn't know the outside world, but now wants to take advantage of this opportunity. Mankind tries to explore new endeavors, whether innocently like a toddler to lights, or promiscuously like John.
* 3 scenes are a progression of John---young John w/ Linda (confused...scared...sad...shame...seeing her with men), John & book (modesty---words to understand that emotion) and then John & Lenina (tempting to be with her, but knows better because of Shakespeare's modest influences). * John's loss of innocence---born into chaos...his mom is the mirror of his self and his own shame.
* Women have more obvious consequences with having sex and that's why she's smiling but still coy.

The scenes show John's progression of maturity. As a child he was scarred by his mother's affairs with men, especially Pope. He then was taught by her to read, although the first book he read disgusted him. He then was given a book of Shakespear and he almost conditioned himself to quote his lines. Finally, the final scene shows that promiscuity dominates, even in the more mature population. It is showing John debating whether or not to zip down Lenina's shirt.
